Illustrated with eighty illustrations and photographic plates. Collated, complete.

The first edition of Hurley's work, exploring the lives and customs of the people of Papua New Guinea and the Torres Strait, with discussions of the coral reefs, 'aborigines of the interior', turtles, and 'strange rites and stranger images'.

With the inscription 'Riddell House' to the verso of the front free endpaper.

In 1921, Hurley released a documentary film about his trip. Reviews were strong, with a contemporary critic calling it 'probably the most beautifully photographed pictorial of the kind that has ever been screened'.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with a touch of discolouration to back strip. Inscription to verso of front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. One plate detached and loosely inserted.
