The first trade edition.

Author's presentation copy, inscribed to the recto to the front endpaper, 'Sir Algernon Tudor-Craig, with the compliments and good wishes of A. Edward Newton, Christmas 1923'.

Pasted below the author's ink inscription is a newspaper clipping obituary of Newton.

Bookplate of Sir Algernon Tudor Tudor-Craig to the front paste down. Tudor-Craig was a British Army officer, and author, known for his works on armorial porcelain.

Author's bookplate to the recto to the front free endpaper.

Including three typed signed letters from the author addressed to Algernon Tudor Craig loosely inserted, dated January 23rd 1923, May 19th 1923, and August 26th 1924.

A. Edward Newton was an American industrialist and avid book collector, who had approximately 10,000 books in his collection, including an autographed manuscript of 'Far From the Madding Crowd'.

Illustrated with a colour portrait frontispiece, and eight plates.

Collated, complete. 

An entertaining play about Samuel Johnson, the cast of characters including James Boswell, Hester Thrale, and Fanny Burney.

Condition

In the original publisher's quarter cloth binding with paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Some rubbing to the boards and head and tail of the spine. Some light marks to the boards. Joints are a little faded, as is the rear board. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Bookplate to the front paste down, newspaper clipping and author's inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. Bookplate to the recto to the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
