A complete eight volume set of this work. First published between 1923 and 1958, this so-called 'reprint edition' was published in 1970, as identified by the presence of ISBNs to the title page versos of volumes 1, 2, 3, 7, and 8.
Volumes I and II are eighth printings of this edition, vols. III, IV, V and VI are seventh printings, and volumes VII and VIII are sixth printings.
Volumes IV-VIII retain the very scarce original glassine.
Lynn Thorndike was an American historian of medieval science and alchemy, who authored many works on magic and science.
Each volume is dedicated to magic and experimental science in different periods:
Vol. I: The First Thirteen Centuries: The Roman Empire; Early Christian Thought; The Early Middle Ages
Vol. II: The First Thirteen Centuries: The Twelfth Century; The Thirteenth Century
Vols. III and IV: The Fourteenth and Fifteenth Centuries
Vols. V and VI: The Sixteenth Century
Vols. VII and VIII: The Seventeenth Century
This work is scarce in a complete eight volume set of any edition.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth bindings, with five volumes retaining the publisher's original glassine. Externally, exceptional. Glassine back strips age toned. Minor closed tears to head of back strips and wraps of glassine of vol IV. Closed tear to head of fold over rear joint of volumes V and VI. Closed tear to tail of rear wrap of vol VI, VII. Significant closed tear to front wrap of vol VIII. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
