An undated copy of this popular English novel for children by Charles Kingsley. Dated from Jisc 1922 from its matching pagination and number of plates.
Originally serialised for 'Macmillan's Magazine,' this novel saw its first publication in book form in 1863. The story sees protagonist named Tom a young chimney sweep, who falls into a river and is transformed into a water-baby. It was written as part satire in support of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species.
Illustrated with forty eight full page coloured plates by Harry G. Theaker. Collated, complete.

Condition
In the original publisher's cloth binding with a colourful illustration laid on to the front board. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and a minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, with a slight chipping to the head of the spine. Previous ownership signature in pencil to the recto of the frontispiece, dated 1928. Internally, the binding is only slightly tender to the boards, otherwise firmly bound throughout. The pages are clean throughout with only a faint touch of age toning, as usual. Illustrated with forty eight coloured plates by Harry G. Theaker. Collated, complete.
