The first edition of this work. Vilhjalmur Stefansson tells of how he became an explorer and of his first trip to the Arctic. An account of early explorations with details on how he survived in the polar regions. 

A signed presentation copy, inscribed by Stefansson to the recto of the publication history leaf 'For Ted Margetts, the tale of a first Arctic year to remind him of his first African,' dated '57.

With the unclipped dust wrapper. Illustrated with a frontispiece and fifteen full page plates. Collated, with printing error repeating pp.103-118 between pp.134 and 151. Lacking pp. 135-150. All plates present.


Condition

In the original publisher's full cloth binding with maps to the endpapers. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and a minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Inscribed by the author to the recto of the publication history leaf, dated 1957. The dust wrapper is sound with some chipping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, some creasing to the front wrap. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean, only the odd minor spot to the first few leaves. Illustrated with a frontispiece and fifteen full page plates. Collated, with printing error repeating pp.103-118 between pp.134 and 151. Lacking pp. 135-150. All plates present.
