Description

Colour Plates, First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper

The first edition of this work. Held in the original publisher's uncut dustwrapper This work is a children's adaptation of W. S. Gilbert's comic opera 'The Mikado'. The opera is set in Japan, which allowed Gilbert to satirise British politics and institutions, as he cleverly disguised them. The opera is one of the most frequently performed works in musical theatre. Gilbert was a dramatist, best known for his collaborations with Arthur Sullivan, who produced the music for this opera. The most famous of their works are 'H.M.S. Pinafore', and 'The Pirates of Penzance'. Illustrated by Alice B. Woodward. Woodward was one of the most prolific illustrators at the turn of the twentieth century. She is best known for her illustrations for children's literature, and for her scientific illustrations. With a colour frontispiece, five colour plates, and ten in-text monochrome engravings. Collated, complete.
