Clements Markham's brilliant work on the history of the Arctic and Antarctic exploration.
Markham was responsible for organising the 1901-04 British National Antarctic Expedition, more commonly known as the 'Discovery' Expedition, which launched the career of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, and which included Ernest Shackleton.
In this work Markham looks at the strides in development made in Arctic exploration throughout history, focusing out particularly important expeditions and explorers, from the Medieval age to the 20th Century.
Ink inscription of 'Robert M. Harring 1922' to the front paste down. Fourteen leaves of handwritten notes by Harring loosely inserted, regarding New South Greenland and exploration.
Condition
In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with light marks to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Spine is lightly faded. Small wrinkle to the rear board. Front hinge is a little strained. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some scattered spots.
