A Limited Edition work, this is number two-hundred and eighty-five of four-hundred and thirty copies produced.

Illustrated with eight tipped in colour plates from artist, designer and author Claud Lovat Fraser. Collated, complete.

A first edition thus of John Gay's 1728 satirical ballad opera. With music was arranged by German composer Johann Christoph Pepusch, 'The Beggar's Opera' ran for sixty-two consecutive performances in 1728, making it the second longest run in theatre history up to that point.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with fairly significant spotting throughout.
