What Our Customers Say...

Description

Colour Plates, Illustrated

'The Beggar's Opera' is a satirical ballad opera, and features a caricature of Sir Robert Walpole. Its music was arranged by German composer Johann Christoph Pepusch. It ran for sixty-two consecutive performances in 1728, making it the second longest run in theatre history until then.

John Gay (1685-1732) was an English poet, 'The Beggar's Opera' being his most celebrated work. He was a long friend of Alexander Pope after having dedicated his work 'Rural Sports' to him; they both joined the Scriblerus Club, a group of Augustan authors prominent in the early eighteenth century.

Illustrated by C. Lovat Fraser with seven full plates, illustrated in colour, as well as a full colour frontispiece. Collated, complete.

With music accompanying the text.
