Bound in a half-crushed morocco binding on cloth boards.

Illustrated with a frontispiece and forty-eight colour plates drawn by William Gibb (1839-1929), a Scottish landscape artist and book illustrator. 

This is an informative work on musical instruments 'historic, rare, and unique', written by A. J. Hipkins. This text works through a range of instruments, both popular and more uncommon, including the bagpipes, the rizzio guitar, the lute, and the 'viola da gamba'. 

Written by Alfred James Hipkins (1826-1903), an English musician, musicologist and antiquary. He began his musical career as a piano tuner at the age of fourteen. He also wrote the works 'The Old Clavier of Keyboard Instruments' and  'Description and History of the Pianoforte'. 

With an institutional bookplate to front paste down belonging to the 'Borough of Folkestone', as well as the odd institutional stamp and pencil inscription throughout the text. 

Collated, complete.

Condition

Bound in a half-crushed morocco binding on cloth boards. Institutional binding with gilt number inscribed on spine. Externally, generally smart. Wear to the extremities and the spine, particularly the head and tail, as well as the leather on the bottom of the front board. A few marks to boards. Institutional bookplate to front paste down. Age-toning and the odd mark to the endpapers and paste downs. Pencil inscription to front endpaper, as well as a stamp and an additional institutional label. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with light age-toning to the text and the odd stamp throughout the text.
