Elie Metchnikoff was a Russian zoologist best known for his pioneering research in immunology; he was the first to discover the major defence mechanism in innate immunity, a process called 'phagocytosis.' He received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1908 along with Paul Ehrlich.

In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with minor shelf wear and a minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Minor chipping to the extremities of the spine, some fading to the spine. Previous ownership inscription to the front free endpaper and pastedown, undated. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor faint spotting to the odd leaf, particularly to the first and last few; otherwise, the pages are bright and clean throughout.
