The title story was serialized in Strand Magazine, between December 1912 and February 1913. Written by Sir Henry Rider Haggard, an English writer of adventure fiction romances set in exotic locations and a pioneer of the lost world literary genre. With original misprints: p. 48, line 23 - "truck" should be "struck". p. 58, line 26 - "Man-kau-ra" should be "Men-kau-ra".
