With a frontispiece of Roger Bacon from a statue outside of the University Museum, Oxford. Scarce. The first edition of the work. Bookplate of one ' LEJ and MA Brooke' to front pastedown. Herbert Stanley Redgrove was a chemist and founder of the Alchemical Society in London. He wrote profusely on the subject and related works including other works on famous alchemist and occultists such as Joseph Glanvill. In this fascinating work. Regrove offers a detailed insight into the life of 13th century English philosopher and Friar Roger Bacon. As with Regrove's interests, Bacon is credited with a number of alchemical texts, including a formula for a philosopher's stone.

Condition

In the original brown soft cloth binding. Externally smart, with just some slight shelf wear to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine. Slight fading to the extremities and the spine. A few light marks to the boards. Personal bookplate to front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with just the odd spot and marginal age toning heavier to the first and last few pages.
