This is a wonderful copy of 'The Water-Babies', also titled 'A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby'. This children's book by Charles Kingsley was originally written from 1862 to 1863 in Macmillan's Magazine, as a satire in support of Charles Darwin's 'On the Origin of Species'. Though it was a very popular work in the United Kingdom, it fell out of favour in America due to 'its claimed prejudiced against Irish, Jews, Catholics, and Americans'.
Charles Kingsley (1819-1875) was a priest for the Church of England, a professor, as well as a novelist. He was one of the most prominent figures within the Christian socialism movement, and was also a friend to Charles Darwin.
Jessie Willcox Smith (1863-1935) was an American illustrator during the Golden Age of American illustrations, and contributed to a wide range of books and magazines during this period. She illustrated for the 'Mother Goose' series, as well as Louisa May Alcott's 'Little Women'.
