'The Ingoldsby Legends, or Mirth and Marvels' is a collection of myths, legends, and poetry written by English clergyman Richard Harris Barham, under the pen-name Thomas Ingoldsby. Starting as a magazine series, their popularity resulting in a compilation first published in 1840. The stories continued to be successful, seeing edition published throughout the 19th century. Including twenty illustrations by Cruikshank, Leech, and Barham. Born in Canterbury in 1788, Barham was a cleric of the the Church of England as well as a novelist and a poet. His first contribution to the 'Blackwood Magazine' was in 1826, but it wasn't until 1837 that began writing a series of tales of the 'Bentley Miscellany'. These tales would later form 'The Ingoldsby Legends'.

Condition

In original half morocco binding, with cloth covered boards. Externally, very smart, with a small amount of shelfwear to the joints. There is also some minor rubbing to the front and rear board edges. Spine has faded slightly, as usual with this colouring. A few marks to boards. Previous owners book plate to the front pastedown. Slight age toning to the front and rear endpaper, to the edges. Signed binding, 'Jackson, Wylie and Co., Glasgow' binders stamp to the verso of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
