Description

First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce

First edition one of Vita Sackville-West's first regularly published work. Written while living in Istanbul with her newly wed husband Harold Nicolson, to whom the book is dedicated"To the unkindest of critics H.G.N." It was during that time that Vita started gardening and became passionate about it, a passion that she would hang on to and eventually design her famous garden at Sissinghurst. Comprising twenty poems, thirteen of which previously unseen.

Vita Sackville-West was a prolific and successful writer from the early 1900s and a gardener. She was twice awarded the Hawthornden Prize for Imaginative Literature: in 1927 for her pastoral epic, The Land, and in 1933 for her Collected Poems. She was the inspiration for the protagonist of Orlando: A Biography, by her famous friend and lover, Virginia Woolf.
