A fascinating work on modern whaling and bear hunting. Containing a wealth of information on whaling techniques in Scotland, Scandinavia, Portugal, and the Antarctic. Including information on bear and seal hunting in the Antarctic and Arctic as well.

Written and illustrated by William Gordon Burn Murdoch, a Scottish painter, explorer, and travel writer in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

Containing thirty plates, including a frontispiece in colour, all done by the author. Collated, complete.

The personal copy of Leonard Harrison Matthews, a renowned twentieth-century British zoologist known for his research on marine mammals, noted by his signature to the front free-endpaper.

This copy came from the library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire, the previous home of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie (1902-1968). She was an English socialite and through her mother was the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII.
