Description

First Edition, Illustrated

A variant of the first UK edition, in the variant blue cloth binding with black lettering and white end papers, and without the publisher's catalogue to the rear. Includes the misprints of the first edition, as stated in Scott 65. As shown by the pagination, this volume is lacking the list of illustrations. Ink inscription to the front paste down. A colour reproduction of a painting by Maurice Greiffenhagen, potentially from the original dust wrapper, is tipped in to the verso of the title page. Illustrated with a black-and-white frontispiece and fifteen further plates by Maurice Greiffenhagen. Collated, complete. Originally published in The Windsor Magazine and New Story Magazine, between December 1913 and November 1914, this novel features Allan Quatermain, who receives a rare orchid from a friend who has spent years exploring Africa. After a mix-up with the flower, the story continues to Africa, as characters try to recover a live specimen of the same orchid. Written by popular author Henry Rider Haggard, who was a pioneer in the world of adventure fiction and romance, and in particular the 'Lost World' genre.
