The first edition of this autobiographical guide to tennis from American tennis player Maurice McLoughlin. Known for his powerful serve, overhead, and volley, McLoughlin was the first male tennis champion from the western United States.
The first issue, lettered in gilt.
The work was actually ghost written by American novelist Sinclair Lewis, the first author from the United States to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Illustrated with seventy-one photographic figures. Collated, complete.
With a former owner's inscription, dated 1915, to the front free endpaper.
With an introduction from tennis champion Richard Norris Williams.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Light rubbing to back strip head and tail, with instances of fading to rear board and perimeters of front board. Hinges strained, but firmly held. Inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean, with the odd instance of light spotting.
