In a prize binding from Prince Edward's School.
Part of the Biographical Edition of the works of Thackeray.
'The History of Henry Esmond' tells the story of the eponymous character, who was a colonel for Queen Anne, during the time of the English Restoration. There was a sequel published in 1859 called 'The Virginians'.
This volume also includes 'The English Humorists of the Eighteenth Century', 'The Four Georges', and 'Charity and Humour'.
Illustrated with a frontispiece, nineteen plates, and in-text illustrations.
Collated, complete.
William Thackeray is best known for his satirical works looking at English society, most especially for 'Vanity Fair'. He tended to be quite savage in his attacks on society, publishing under various pseudonyms in his youth to avoid personal criticism.
Condition
In a full morocco prize binding. Externally, generally smart. Spine is a little faded and rubbed, with a very small amount of loss to the head. Some minor marks to the boards. Front hinge is starting but firm. Prize label and bookseller's label to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some odd spots.
