Falling somewhere between the genres of memoir and novel, this work has long been considered a classic of 19th-century English literature. George Borrow was a English novelist and writer of travel works. During his travel he build a close relationship with the Romani people of Europe, who heavily influenced his writings. In fact the title of this particular work 'Lavengro' is derived from a Romani word that translates into 'word master'.
