Written by John MacGowan, of Amoy, South China. A comprehensive ethnographical study of Chinese culture in the early twentieth-century. Written from a social perspective, telling the stories of everyday people and everyday activities. Including a tipped in colour plate to the front board, titled 'Young Cheerful', as called for. Including a map of to the pastedown and first free-endpaper, as called for. Also including thirty-six pages illustrations, collated and complete. This copy includes a prize inscription to the verso of the front free-endpaper: 'Presented to Janet Kilby, By the London Missionary Society for collecting the sum of Six Shillings and Two Pence for the New Year Offering for Ships, Cory S. School Deddington, Feb 1914'.
Condition
In the publisher's original decorative cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with some bumping to the extremities and head and tail of the spine. Odd mark to the front board. Prize inscription to the verso of the front free-endpaper. Internally, front hinge is slightly strained, but remaining very firm. Book is firmly bound. A few spots to the front pastedown and free-endpaper, and some age-toning to the half title page, but otherwise pages are bright and clean.
