'A landsman's log of life on board a cargo boat to Malaya, China, Japan etc.' details the adventures of Francis E. Powell on board the "Theseus", whose voyage to the East covered '24, 854 miles in all' and took 102 days, 73 of which were 'spent on sea and 29 on land'. With four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of the text. Featuring prior owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown: 'A E Smith' Collated complete with 12 monochromatic plates, and two additional tipped-in plates in colour: 'A Japanese Flower Guard' (facing page xvi) and 'A Japanese Girl' (facing page xvi).

Condition

In original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Slightly bumped to extremities and head and tail of spine. Sunned to spine. Slight marks to front and rear board. Ink stain to rear board. Offsetting to endpapers. Prior owner's ink inscription to front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with light spots to fore-edge, affecting the occasional page. Heavier spotting to the first and last few pages. Plate "Ships of the Desert" is facing page 31, rather than page 29 (as stated on the plate and list of illustrations. Containing two tipped-in additional plates in colour with tissue guards: 'A Japanese Flower Guard' (facing page xvi) and 'A Japanese Girl' (facing page xvi).
