Description

Illustrated, Leather Binding

Bound by Ralph Partridge, an amateur bookbinding enthusiast and important figure in the Bloomsbury Group. They are in quarter calf, with hand-printed paper. He worked for Virginia and Leonard Woolf. He was first married to the English painter Dora Carrington with whom he had a menage a trois with Lytton Strachey. Partridge was the unrequited love of Strachey for many years. Whilst married to Carrington, Partridge fell in love with Frances Marshall. He married her in 1894. In a letter to Partridge from Virginia Woolf dated 29 June 1925 she asks him to 'send me a list of your terms for binding books'. From the library of David Garnett, with his inscription to the recto of front free endpaper. David Garnett was known as 'Bunny' to his friends. He gained literary recognition with his novel 'Lady into a Fox' which was awarded the 1922 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction. He founded the Nonesuch Press with Francis Meynell. Edited by Henry Debraye. Limitation note to the verso of front endpaper, signed by the publisher, Edouard Champion. This unfinished biography was begun on November 23 1835 and was abandoned March 26 1836. With a frontispiece, and four plates to volume I, frontispiece and four plates to volume II. Written by Stendhal, a 19th century French author. 'Stendhal' was the pen name of Marie-Henri Beyle. He is regarded as one of the earliest and foremost practitioners of realism.

Condition

In quarter crushed morocco bindings. Externally, very smart. Minor shelfwear to the paper covered boards. David Garnett's inscription to the recto of front endpaper. Prior owner's pencil inscription to the verso of rear endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Light spots to the first and last few pages. Otherwise, just the odd spot.
