The work is considered one of the largest reference works on Western music. Illustrated throughout with diagrams of instruments, their mechanics and sheet music. Volume one runs from A to E, volume two from F to L and volume three from M to P. Grove limited the chronological span of his work to begin at 1450 while continuing up to the present day. Complete in five volumes.

Condition

In a half calf binding. Externally, generally smart with minor shelfwear as head and tail of spines are bumped. Sunning to spines. Ink inscription to front pastedown dated to 1914. Internally, firmly bound with light foxing to pastedowns and end-papers, otherwise pages bright and clean.
