Arnold Henry Savage-Landor was an explorer and anthropologist, often travelling throughout his life, starting by moving to Paris when he was fifteen to study. During his life he travelled to America, Japan, Korea, China, and Abyssinia. He was invitied by Queen Victoria to share his tales and drawings from his trips, and subsequently started to publish travel books accompanied with his illustrations. These include 'In the Forbidden Land', 'Tibet and Nepal', and 'The Gems of the East'. 'Across the Unknown South America' is about the expedition he made in 1911 to 1912. It's an optimistic look at the continent that he considers to be 'the coming continent of the future'. With a folding map to the rear of Volume One. Volume One sixty-eight pages of plates Volume Two had one-hundred and seven pages of plates. Collated, incomplete; Volume One is lacking the coloured plates facing pages 238 and 294, Volume Two is lacking the coloured plate facing page 336.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. Volume One has slight fading to the spine, and further light fading to the boards, due to sunning. Light shelfwear to the boards. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Front hinge of Volume One is starting but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot and handling mark throughout. Small closed tear to the fore edge of page 113/114 to Volume Two. Volume Two is lacking the coloured plate facing page 336. Volume One is lacking the coloured plates facing pages 238 and 294. Page 239 in Volume One is lifting but remains in place.
