Profusely illustrated throughout by numerous artists including Fred Barnard, George Cruikshank and John Hassall. In addition, each volume has a delightful colour frontispiece. A collection of sketches, poetry and stories, written by various British humorists, on different topics such as holidays, sports and animals. Edited by J. A. Hammerton, the editor of the 'Punch Library of Humour'. Hammerton was a journalist and editor known for his work on encyclopedias and historical accounts. This set comprises of: 'The Family Circle', relating to family, friends and the home, with titles such as 'Household Songs', 'A Domestic Love Song', and 'The Sick Child'. 'Things in General', a variety of humorous pieces which defy classification. With titles such as 'The Wedding Breakfast', 'At Election Time', and 'Phantoms'. 'Stage, Study & Studio', giving a comic representation of authors, artists and actors. With titles such as 'Street Musicians', 'Mark Twain and the Key', and 'Lyceum Lyrics'. 'Our Country Cousins and Our Warriors', humorous pieces relating to the countryside, soldiers and sailors. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally, very smart with some light shelf wear to the edges. Some bumping to the spine. Light marks to the boards and spines. Small mark to the upper board of 'Stage Study & Studio'. Fading to the spine. Some scattered spots to the free endpapers. Offsetting to the rear free endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age-toned but otherwise very bright and clean. The odd handling mark and spot throughout. The occasional page is uncut. Two closed tears to the frontispiece of 'Stage, Study & Studio'. Cockling to the rear paste-down of 'Sports & Pastimes'. Mark to the edge of the title page of, 'In Animal Land'. Some spotting to the fore-edges.
