Colour Plates, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce
A very scarce edition of La Fontaine's fables, illustrated with moving plates.
Featuring six fables, which are printed on the versos of the moving plates. These fables are The Fox and the Stork; The Wolf and the Lamb; The City Rat and the Country Rat; The Fox and Raven; The Hare and the Tortoise, and the Grasshopper and the Ant.
Illustrated with six colour plates, with moving parts and pull tabs in full working order. Collated, complete.
With the inscription 'To Denis, Fr. Mr Miff, Xmas 1916' to the front pastedown.
With five loosely inserted Fujifilm Instax images of pop-up books from a similar period.
With the label of Michael and Megan Dawson, a husband and wife who established a successful business dealing in and restoring pop-up books, to the head of the front pastedown.
Undated; dated 1912 via the British Library.
A very scarce volume.
Condition
In the publisher's cloth backed pictorial paper covered boards. A touch of fraying to back strip head and tail, with light handling marks to front board perimeter. Former owner's label to head of front pastedown, with former owner's inscription to front pastedown. Front hinge reinforced with tape, with rear hinge lightly strained but firmly held. Internally, binding a touch strained, with title page detached to head. Extensive tape repairs to fore edge and tail of title page, with chipping to head. Closed tears and chipping to tail of each life, with tape repairs to tail of two further leaves. Final leaf lacking half of paper backing, revealing half of the moving mechanism. All pull tabs and moving parts in full working order.
