A classic of English children's literature, The Secret Garden was originally serialised in The American Magazine. The first UK edition of this work in book form, published in the UK in 1911 with eight lovely full page coloured plates by Charles Robinson. The US edition was published earlier in the same year by the Frederick A. Stokes Company with illustrations by Maria Louise Kirk.

Collated, complete with eight full page plates, with tissue guards to each plate. 

This work is one of Burnett's most famous books. The novel follows the story of Mary Lennox, a spoiled and neglected ten-year-old girl living in India with her wealthy English family. She remains orphan after a cholera kills her parents and the servants, and is sent to live with her maternal uncle, Archibald Craven.

With six leaves of publisher's advertisements to the rear.

Acquired from the sale of Paul Gallico's library, American novelist and short story and spots writer, best remembered for The Snow Goose and The Poseidon Adventure.

Condition

In the original publisher's full cloth binding with gilt tooling to the front board and spine. Externally smart with minor shelf wear and some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, minor marking to the boards. Faint contemporary inscription by a previous owner to the front free endpaper. The front hinges are only slightly loose. internally, firmly bound. With a minor faint spotting scattered throughout to the occasional leaf, although the leaves appear generally bright and clean throughout. Illustrated with eight full page coloured plates by Charles Robinson. Collated, complete.
