First edition. With a colour frontispiece and three colour plates. Collated complete. A historical novel with fantasy elements, set during the reign of Edward III. The novel depicts the Battle of Crecy and the Black Death, with a supernatural death-like figure known as Murgh. Written by Sir Henry Rider Haggard, an English writer of adventure fiction romances set in exotic locations and a pioneer of the lost world literary genre.

Condition

In the original pictorial cloth binding. Externally, smart with minor wear to the extremities and light fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot. Further scattered spotting to the first and last few pages with light age toning to the endpapers. Contemporary inscription to the front endpaper.
