What Our Customers Say...

Description

Colour Plates, Illustrated

Collated, complete with sixteen colour plates by English artist and book illustrator Walter Crane, who is often considered as one of the most prolific children’s book creators of his generation. Crane was renowned for his 'child in the garden motifs' that were extremely influential in shaping the direction of children's illustrated literature, yet the artist is also remembered for his creation of a number of iconic images associated with the international Socialist movement. Indeed, Crane contributed weekly cartoons to the socialist periodicals 'Justice' and 'The Commonweal', advocating his belief in the power of art and its ability to transform society. However, it is indeed Crane's illustrations within children's book that has remained most prominently within public memory, and his iconic vivid and surreal style clearly influenced by medieval wood engravers and illuminated books that is most commonly associated with the artist. Henry Gilbert was a popular children author whose works (that are renowned for their historical accuracy and story telling style) have remained incredibly popular even a century after their original publication. Some of his other works include: 'Robin Hood and the Men of the Greenwood' 'The Book of Pirates' 'Pirates: True Tales of Notorious Buccaneers' Featuring prior owner's contemporary ink inscription to the front free end-paper, dated '1913'.
