A detailed history of the rise of the Dutch Republic, written after the author spent five years exploring archives at Dresden, Brussels, and The Hague.

The work was immensely popular when published, quickly being translated into many languages. 

Written by John Lothrop Motley, who is best known for this work and for 'The United Netherlands'.

Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, and two plates.

Volume II illustrated with a frontispiece, and one plate.

Volume III illustrated with a frontispiece, and two plates.

Collated, complete.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. Very light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Spines are lightly faded, a few very light marks to the boards and spines. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper of Volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
