First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Signed

Flat signed by Chesterton to the half title.

The first UK edition, first issue, with cancel title page and cancel paged 357, and with errata slip to page 93. Sullivan, 17A.

The US first edition was published the year prior.

Chesterton's novel follows a theological dispute between two Scotsmen, allegorically exploring the debate between theism and atheism, echoing Chesterton's own public debates about religion with his friend George Bernard Shaw.

With the inscription Johanne Hayes to the front free endpaper.

A beautiful example of this signed first edition.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with a touch of fading to spine, otherwise externally excellent. Inscription to front free endpaper, signed by author to title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
