This is a popular German romance fairy-tale by author Friedrich de la Motte Fouque (1777-1843), translated from the original German by W.L. Courtney. A classic early German romance, 'Undine' tells the tale of the titular water spirit and Huldebrand the knight, whom she marries in order to gain a soul.

Illustrated by Arthur Rackham, a prominent illustrator of the time, who lent his artistic talent to other works including 'Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens' and 'Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm'. With fifteen tipped in illustrations in colour.

This is the first trade edition.

Condition

In the publisher's original pictorial full cloth binding. Externally very smart, a touch of fading to the spine and general wear. Pencil gift inscription to the half title page. Internally firmly bound, pages are bright and clean.
