Originally a work by German art historians Oskar Fischel and Max von Boehn, here translated into English for the first time by M. Edwardes, the work features tissue-guarded colour frontispieces in each volume and numerous further plates, many coloured, by a wide variety of European artists, including illustrations in the text. Contains the ink inscription of one Dagman Smith dated 15/5/1918, Paris

Condition

In decorative cloth binding with gilt detailing. Externally sound, there is wear to backstrips, with some starting to the first volume, as well as markings to the boards and backstrips. Internally, the pages are generally firmly bound, with some minor strain in areas, and are bright and clean throughout.
