The first edition of this work. A collection of folklore from Santal Parganas, a district in India, with the Santal tribe being one of the largest tribal groups of Jharkhand, also being spread out to various other parts of India. Included in this volume is 'The Cruel Stepmother', 'How the Cowherd Found a Bride', 'The Killing of the Tiger', 'The Rajah's Advice', 'The Caterpillar Boy', 'Catching a Thief', 'The Hyena Outwitted', 'The Bonga Exorcised', 'The Influence of the Moon', and many more'. Translated into English by Cecil Henry Bompas. Bompas was an orientalist, being an officer in the Indian Civil Service during the British rule of India.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with some rubbing to the boards and spine causing a little discolouration. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. The odd spot to the fore edge. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd scattered spot.
