This is an informative work on the life of Madame de Pompadour and her relation to Henri Bertin from 1759 to 1763, written by Georges Bussiere.

Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764) was a member of the French court and was the official chief mistress to King Louis XV, remaining influential until her death. Henri Bertin (1720-1792) was a French statesman and controller general of finances to Louis XV.

The two figures are connected within this work because it is argued that Madame de Pompadour was an integral part of Bertin becoming appointed to this illustrious station. The author states that 'When the Marquise, at the decline of her charms and at the height of her influence', began to direct political policies, she pushed Bertin from his role as lieutenant general of police to controller of finances.
