An Important Work, Illustrated
Bound in cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. Two volumes, complete. Can command up to £500 but slightly worn here and priced accordingly. This work contains an extensive number of biographies, with portraits, of eminent British sportsmen. With a presentation label from the Turf Club, presented by Lt-Colonel James S. Forbes, July 1949. The first British newspaper entitled The Sportsman began publishing from 1865, some six years after the Sporting Life. It ran until 1924.
Condition
Bound in cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. The bindings are generally tight and firm. The hinges are starting, and the inner hinges are strained. Several plates from each volume, and pages 221 and 323 of volume 2 ,are detached. There is significant wear to the extremities, including significant bumping, rubbing, and discolouration. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright, with slight browning to the page edges, and scattered spotting. There are small closed tears and chips to intermittent pages, most prominent to the first and last pages. Page 51 of volume 1 has marginal sections missing, and several closed tears, with a repair over a small missing section and closed tear, as shown above.
