Description

Colour Plates, First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce

A presentation set, with the inscription "This and four other volumes were presented to Mr and Mrs Hobhouse by Mr Davis after meeting him at Thebes. Feby. 1911", to the verso of the front endpaper of 'The Tomb of Queen Tiyi'.

Theodore M. Davis was an American lawyer who sponsored important excavations in the Valley of the Kings from 1902-1914, conducted by Howard Carter, Gaston Maspero and others. They discovered around thirty tombs, but after failing in his quest to find an intact royal tomb (he was only two metres away from discovering the entrance to Tutankhamun's tomb) the management of excavations passed to Lord Carnarvon, in 1915.

Present here are three richly illustrated volumes detailing the excavations.

The first work here is the very scarce 1908 'The Funeral Papyrus of Iouiya'. Illustrated with thirty-four monochrome reproductions of the papyrus. Collated, complete. f hinge tender

The second is the 1908 volume examining 'The Tomb of Siphtah; the Monkey Tomb and the Gold Tomb'. Illustrated with twenty-seven plates - including eleven chromolithographs - by E. Harold Jones. Collated, complete.

The final volume, bearing the association inscription and published in 1910, examines the 'Tomb of Queen Tiyi'. Illustrated with a frontispiece and thirty five plates. Collated, complete.
