The first edition of the first two volumes of Carse's four volume work. 

Volume I, covering the years between William I and Henry III, is illustrated with ten vibrant full colour plates, and numerous vignette illustrations. 

Volume II, covering the years between Edward I and Richard III, is illustrated with ten full colour plates, and further vignette illustrations.

Collated, complete.

These illustrations are the work of English cartoonist, illustrator and artist William Heath Robinson, best known for his drawings of elaborate and whimsical machinery.

Two further volumes were published; volume III, Henry VII to Elizabeth, and volume IV, James I to Edward VII.
