Originally published in 1865 this reprint inculdes the original preface. Matthew Arnold has been characterised as a sage writer, a writer who typically chastises and instructs the reader regarding social issues. He worked as an inspector of schools and was son of Thomas Arnold, famed headmaster of Rugby School.

Condition

In a calf prize binding. Externally, lovely condition. Some minor handling marks to the boards. Prize bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean.
