This novel was written by H. Rider Haggard, a popular author of adventure novels and a pioneer of the 'lost world' genre. The story follows a young man called Ruper Ullershaw who, after the suicide of the women he loves and promising his mother to always 'follow the way of the spirit, not that of the flesh', spends 11 years soldiering in India and Egypt. After his return to England he is soon sent back to Egypt for a dangerous mission.

In the publisher's original paper covers. Externally generally smart with fading, a slight lean, creasing, loss to the tail of the spine with a closed tear to the head and joints starting. Small tape repair to the head of the front hinge. Internally binding generally firm with the first few pages starting and cords showing between pp. 320 and 321. Pages age toned with occasional light spotting.
