The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, first published in 1798, marked the beginning of British Romantic literature. This tragic poem recounts the story of a cursed sailor, which is told as a warning to consider the consequences of one's actions. It is now so famous that it prompted the English language idiom: "an albatross around one's neck".
Undated, dated through copies held at the British Library.
