What Our Customers Say...
Description
Decorative Binding, Early Edition, Illustrated
An early edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with pictorial gilt to the front board and spine.
Frederick Joseph Harvey Darton (1878-1936) was an author, publisher, and historian of children's literature. He was best known for his pioneering works in The Story of English Children's Books in England: Five Centuries of Social Life (1932).
First published in 1904, Darton provides retellings of stories from Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. He includes tales from all the pilgrims apart from the Reeve, the Merchant, and the Monk. The Miller's tale is briefly told. He also includes 'The Siege of Thebes' and 'The Tale of Beryn'.
This work is charmingly illustrated throughout by the popular artist Hugh Thomson, best known for his pen-and-ink illustrations of works by authors such as Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and J. M. Barrie.
