What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

The first edition of this study of the grand homes of Bath and Somerset. This work is the second series, printed due to the popularity of the first volume, published in 1901. Just 500 copies were printed of this second volume.

Illustrated with a charming colour frontispiece, and forty-four further plates, the majority of which are portraits of the notable residents of these houses.

In his introduction, the author explains his interest in the study of the town as 'Bath is, of all English towns, the one we invest pre-eminently with literary associations. And these associations are all of the past: nearly all of the eighteenth century'.

From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty of the Edwardian period. Impeccably connected, Pleydell-Bouverie was also the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, and rumoured to be a lover of King Edward VIII. A sparkling figure of fashionable society, her friends included Nancy Mitford, Coco Chanel, Winston Churchill, and Fred Astaire.

This work is from the sale of Pleydell-Bouverie’s library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire. She purchased the home in 1940, redesigning the interior and amassing an impressive library, featuring many examples of her own bookbinding.

With the former owner's label of Harold E. Matthews to the front pastedown.
