1906 Lord Randolph Churchill
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Early Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding
'The Times Book Club' edition of this famous biography of Lord Randolph Churchill by his son Sir Winston Churchill, complete in two volumes. A scarce edition published in the same year as the true first, featuring gilt embossing to spine 'The Times Books Club 1905'. Scarce edition, rarely seen on the market.
The Times Book Club acquired the first edition sheets from Macmillan upon publication, and republished in this binding, more plain and slightly trimmed, sold at a lower price. Churchill was concerned this would affect the sales of Macmillan's first edition, calling this a 'shabby trick'. Although this edition is valued lower than the publisher's binding, it nonetheless contains the original first edition sheets and is a great addition to the collector's library.
Sir Winston Churchill's first biographical work written when he was in his twenties; it draws a strong focus on Lord Randolph's career in parliament after 1880, and received much critical acclaimed (although some less attractive aspects of Lord Randolph were softened.)
Illustrated with eighteen full page plates. Collated, complete.
