Description

Leather Binding

Comprises twelve volumes of an originally larger set of fifteen; lacking vols IX, X and XIV.

Each volume is illustrated with a full plate frontispiece. All bar two of the volumes contain a Charles Dickens centenary stamp from 1912 pasted to the front endpaper.

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an extremely celebrated Victorian writer known for his works which document the social conditions of the time, and his works are still immensely popular today.

Volume I comprises ‘The Pickwick Papers’.

Volume II comprises ‘Nicholas Nickleby’.

Volume III comprises 'Oliver Twist' and 'Sketches by Boz'.

Volume IV comprises 'The Old Curiosity Shop'.

Volume V comprises 'Martin Chuzzlewit'.

Volume VI comprises 'Barnaby Rudge'.

Volume VII comprises 'Dombey and Son'.

Volume VIII comprises 'David Copperfield'.

Volume XI comprises 'Hard Times' and 'Christmas Books'.

Volume XII comprises 'Little Dorrit'.

Volume XIII comprises 'A Tale of Two Cities', 'Pictures from Italy' and 'Master Humphrey's Clock'.

Volume XV comprises 'Our Mutual Friend'.

A beautiful collection of important works by an important author.

Condition

In a full crushed morocco binding. Externally generally smart, with some rubbing to the heads and tail of the spine resulting in some loss to the leather, particularly to vol VI, VIII and XI. Volume XII has a large crack running down the front joint. Ownership inscription of Cecil J. Mackie to the verso of the front endpaper of a number of volumes, and a prize bookplate to the front pastedown of volume V. Centenary stamps to the front endpaper of all volumes bar XII and XV. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean bar the occasional spot. A few stains to the title page of volume XV.
