Description

Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

Across two volumes, Thomas Seccombe offers a historical of survey of English literature from the invention of the printing press to the early twentieth century. With fifteen plates to volume I, and thirty six plates to volume II, collated and complete. The work opens with a chapter on the influence of William Caxton, who was the first English retailer of printed books after he introduced the printing press to England in 1476. Following this, Seccombe offers an biographical sketch of England's important writers accompanied by portrait of the author, or an image inspired by their work. With sections on Drama and Lyric, Satire, Memoir, and the Novel, Seccombe's uncomplicated and entertaining work explores the output and influence of writers such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Samuel Jonson, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
