A detailed and comprehensive set of essays on the English local government through history, written between 1906 and 1929 concerning British constitutional and administrative law, relating to public services and local councils. Written by Martha Beatrice Webb, an English sociologist, economist, feminist and social reformer and her husband Sidney James Webb, a British socialist, economist and reformer. Together they were among the founders of the London School of Economics and played a crucial role in forming the Fabian Society. This set contains: Volume I - The Parish and the County, 1906. Volume III - The Manor and the Borough Part Two, 1908. Volume IV - Statuary Authorities for Special Purposes, 1922. Volume VII - English Poor Law History Part One, 1927. Volume VIII - English Poor Law History Part Two: The Last Hundred Years Part One, 1929. Volume IX - English Poor Law History Part Two: The Last Hundred Years Part Two, 1929. With publisher's catalogue to the rear.

Condition

In the original full cloth binding. Externally, sound with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spines with the odd small mark to the boards. Small splits to the head and tail of the spines to volumes IV and VII. A 6" split to the cloth at the rear joint and spine of volume VII resulting in the spine lifting. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Light spotting and minor age toning to the endpapers. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Bookseller's label to the front pastedown of volume VIII.
