Description

Limited Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce

Volumes I, III, V-VII of this scarce limited edition set containing all of the extant marriage registers of Dorset between 1538 and 1812, including the registers of parishes such as Cattiscock, Milton Abbey, Bothenhampton, Bradpole, and Chilfrome. Only one hundred and fifty copies of the Dorset Parish Register were printed and issued by Phillimore book publishing, who are specialists in the fields of genealogy and local histories. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown of each volume. In volume I, the inscription reads 'E. H. Bates. 24th March 1906'. In volume V upwards, the previous owner refers to himself as E. H. Bates Harbin'. Edward Bates agreed to introduce Harbin to his surname after his uncle died and left him Newton House in Yeovil. The reverend had a keen interest in local history and was the secretary of the Somerset archaeological and Natural History Society.

Condition

In the publisher's original green cloth binding. Externally, smart. A little bumped to the head and tail of the spine, with a closed tear in the cloth at the head of the spine to volumes I and III. The cloth to volume III is discoloured and is lighter than the remaining four volumes. The front hinge of volume I is starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from some light offsetting to the front and rear of each volume, pages are generally bright and clean.
